I always feel a bit weird writing about Christmas in July, especially as we’re experiencing the hottest days on record. But some of you are already knee-deep in baubles and garlands, planning your most important shoot of the year. We’re officially over the start line this week, with the Liberty waitlist open for the beauty advent calendar.
Thinking about where to hold your Christmas event or party is probably far from your mind right now, but heads up — we’re already getting venue enquiries. It’s worth starting to look now, and we’re on hand to help with some interesting ideas. Here’s a handy checklist to bear in mind as you make your venue decision.
Insider party planner tips
Headcount — How many guests do you want to invite? This is really important for your budget, as it lets you work out the cost per person, and it stops you booking a huge venue with a few hustlers rattling around, or one too small where everyone’s squeezed in like sardines.
Location, location, location — Have a good look at transport links and proximity for your guests.
Theme — Are you going all in on a theme for the evening, and will your venue work within that brief?
Style — Think ahead to whether your event will be a stand-up drinks reception, a sit-down dining affair, or a mixture of both. Do you want a bar, a stage — what are the plans?
Budget — Get a clear sense of your total spend early, including hire fees, catering, drinks and any extras like AV or décor, so you’re comparing venues on a like-for-like basis.
Timings & availability — December dates go fast. Lock in your date and check how much setup/breakdown time the venue allows.
Save the date — Once you’ve locked in your venue and date, send save-the-dates early — December diaries fill up fast, and your guests will thank you for the head start.
Catering & drinks — Does the venue have in-house catering, or will you need to bring in outside suppliers? Some venues restrict this.
